Shooting Water with Bill Ward

Thursday 16th July Smethwick Photographic Society will be welcoming back Mr Bill Ward. Actor, Photographer & an ardent advocate of ICM – Intentional Camera Movement.

Multi-award winning creative photographer and actor Bill Ward discusses photographing the wet stuff in all its glory. From waterfalls to seascapes, urban canals to mountain streams, Bill leaves no stone unturned in his quest to uncover the mysteries of H2O, and how we as photographers can help unlock its full potential. Expect a light sprinkling of handy tips and advice, as well as a bucketload of aqueous photographic delight.

Bill Ward is a multi-award winning photographer.  He won the inaugural Adobe Prize at the UK Landscape Photographer of the Year 2015, Best Seascape at Scottish Landscape Photographer of the Year 2020, and was runner up in the Your Vision category at Scottish Landscape Photographer of the Year 2021.  He gives talks at Festivals, Shows, and Camera Clubs all over the world, and is a judge for UK Landscape Photographer of the Year. He is an Ambassador for Pentax Ricoh UK, on the ProTeam for 3LeggedThing, a Tour/Workshop Leader for Light and Land, and shoots for the photographic agencies Robert Harding and ArenaPal.

As an actor, he has appeared in over 30 TV Shows and Films, and 50 Plays since turning professional in 2000.  He is probably best known for playing the rather unpleasant builder Charlie Stubbs in the UK TV show Coronation Street for over 400 episodes, for which he won many awards.  A creative photography specialist, as well as a landscape photographer, he is particularly drawn to water, and is a regular writer and contributor to the worldwide ICM Photography Magazine. He believes in improvising, meeting the landscape on its own terms, and going with what he’s given.

His photography is a response, and in many ways an antidote, to the time he spends as an actor working in the public eye.

There be Dragons and Topkapl Palace with Mark & Judy Buckley-Sharp

On Thursday 9th July Smethwick Photographic Society will be welcoming an exciting new presence to our stage. In fact not one but two Buckley-Sharps. Mark and Judy Buckley-Sharp will giving their very unique take on travelling and photographing Turkey.

Mark Buckley-Sharp ARPS CPAGB HonPAGB and Judy Buckley-Sharp LRPS CPAGB APAGB began visiting Turkiye more than thirty years ago and have been studying its history, geography, culture and language ever since. Their image collection has developed to support and illustrate their research, leading to a series of presentations covering Istanbul, Lykia and Cappadocia. These have been delivered, mostly to camera clubs, on over one hundred and fifty occasions.

Tourists who visit Turkiye for rest and relaxation are missing so much. Mark and Judy’s primary aim is to inform and educate, encouraging those who visit Turkiye to enrich their journey.

The presentation will be in two parts, part one will cover ‘Dragons’ followed by the second which will cover ‘Turkiye and Topkapl Palace’.

I Can’t See the Wood for the Trees with Eddie Hyde

On Thursday 2nd July Smethwick Photographic Society will be welcoming Eddie Hyde to give his unique vision of woodland photography.

In his own words – Eddie has been captivated since a young boy with a Kodak Brownie 127. He says there are no images of any merit from these early days, but there are some that have stood the test of time from university days with the use of his first SLR.

Eddie has explored a wide variety of photographic genres and styles over the years and has a broad appreciation which helps as a Judge with the Surrey Photographic Association. He is now a Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society and an RPS Licentiate panel member assessing ‘Licentiate Distinction’ submissions.

Whilst he enjoys most genres of photography, he always wants to come back to landscape and never feels more alive than when outdoors, anticipating the moment when the magic might happen: the light, weather and landscape combine to create art in front of him, and he is there to capture it.

Eddie’s work can be seen on his website & social media sites via these links:

Photography couple Rod & Anne will be talking through their many print images taken while holidaying far and wide, most recently in Armenia.

Anne Greiner is an active member of Dumfries Camera Club and her work has contributed significantly to their wide-ranging success in National and Inter-Club competitions.  She is one of only a few people who have achieved the Credit, Distinction and Master Award of the PAGB.  Anne is a PAGB Listed judge.  She has judged many International Exhibitions but never a club competition!  She is a member of the London Salon.

Rod Wheelans joined the Dumfries club in 1983 and has served as their President three times. Rod has previously been a member of the RPS Council and has served on the Associate and Fellowship Panels for Visual Art, Photo Travel and Professional & Applied.

Rod is also a member of the London Salon.

Rod has now retired as a successful professional photographer with a busy studio – twice MPA Scottish Portrait Photographer of the Year – but through their professional years he and Anne have never lost their amateur roots, competing and exhibiting widely.
