On Thursday 16th April Smethwick Photographic Society will be welcoming Sue O’Connell. Sue will be presenting live in the clubroom.
While many of Sue’s images are taken in foreign lands, they embrace a range of genres and for that reason Sue prefers to call herself “a photographer who travels”, rather than a “travel photographer”. She has received many awards in salons and also had success in competitions including National Geographic Traveller, World Food Photography Awards, and Travel Photographer of the Year (a Winner in 2025). She is a Fotospeed Ambassador, a member of the PSA Pictorial Print Division board and Chair of WCPF Judge Training.
More Traveller’s Tales
Keeping up the tradition of favouring places not necessarily on everyone’s bucket list, Sue will whisk you to three recent off-beat travel destinations: Colombia, Bangladesh and Angola.
All have troubled histories, and one at least has on-going unrest, so anticipating the very reasonable question “Why?”, she will show some of the magic to be found in each location. Highlights include a remote tribe with a link back to the Aztecs, the wild street art of a C16th walled city, the chaos and cacophony of Dhaka shipbreaking, and an eerie ghost island off the coast of Africa. The talk will reflect on why we travel and on the people and experiences which shape our photography.
Here’s a selection of what we can expect from Sue:

This week’s talk is part of a series of FREE ‘taster’ sessions for local Sandwell community residents and workers (non SPS members or regular guests). If interested do login or better still come along to the live presentation at the clubhouse. Full details below.
